A
FOLLOW ME TO DC community project
DAVID HARRIS, TX 06
For any one that has followed my out-of-the-box campaign thus far, I welcome you to become familiar with our community service efforts. It is difficult running for office for anyone but I was certain that I would use the public forum, while available, to continue something that our family believes wholeheartedly in our own lives every day. If everyone volunteered an hour a week or contributed $20 a month to a charity, I am confident it would change the world.
As a Veteran, I chose to highlight a charity every month starting on Veterans Day last month. You can check here for our
first or second entries or read some of our others. Please consider giving to one or all of them on behalf of Veterans everywhere-thanks for stopping by!
There are 24.7 million Veterans living in the United States. Nearly 23 percent of homeless adults are Veterans and many more Veterans who live in poverty are at risk for becoming homeless. While the war continues in Iraq, many more families are left behind without the help they need when soldiers are deployed or killed in the line of duty. As part of our continued effort to further Veterans causes, we will be highlighting a new Veterans charity in this spot on our blog page every thirty days for the next year.
The fourth charity we are highlighting is
Fisher House. Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House
TM Foundation donates "comfort homes," built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times - during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.
There is at least one Fisher House
TM at every major military medical center to assist families in need and to ensure that they are provided with the comforts of home in a supportive environment. Annually, the Fisher House
TM program serves more than 8,500 families, and have made available more than two million days of lodging to family members since the program originated in 1990. Based on a comparison of fees at a Fisher House
TM (the average charge is less than $10 per family per day, with many locations offering rooms at no cost) with commercial lodging facilities in the same area, it is estimated that families have saved more than $60 million by staying at a Fisher House
TM since the program began.
We encourage donations to this charity via their site or by mail to:
